Last night i just had enough and quit a residency..

I have been putting up with nonsense for a while , i am very , very tolerant but this venue and most of its regulars are just really difficult .

The  few good  patrons i do feel bad for and i will miss them.

next week is my last night there , there is a 50th birthday there next week  which was sprung on me at the start of last night (no extra money , and the manager said if after 1:00am i told the party organiser  to come to you and pay you extra  for overtime..he didn't ask if i was willing to work later first or what time he was prepared to open the bar to) so i have told the management i will do that then call it a day..i am off on my holidays the week after anyway ..for which he hasn't got cover and didn't want two dj's i could get as  "they are rubbish" according to the manager although they have residencies and are in demand and one now works every Friday due to a residency taking him on  friday - Sunday for being so good.

I feel  like i have let myself down and that i am letting the nice people down but the over whelming reasons  which i wont post publicly just got too much, i have never thrown the towel in before

Well done. You've done exactly the right thing. We've quit all our residencies over the years and it's the best thing we ever did. We no longer get paid less just because we're willing to cover all the nights we're asked to by a venue.  We no longer find familiarity breeds contempt. We have fresh faces, fresh challenges every week. If we don't like a particular place or people, we've only got to put up with them for a few hours. I don't know how many of you do residencies, but how can you afford to miss out on the better money elsewhere???

We have all quit a venue for one reason or another, but the main one is that an upstart manager or owner starts looking at us as " one of the staff" and treating us as such or thinks that his gig is your only income and thinks that you wont quit as you are in need of the money.

You have done the right thing, and if you watch that space you will find a change there in the managment sometime in the next 6 months.
You know what they say - it's the quiet ones you have to watch!

Tony and I quit a residency only the other Friday night - The Carlton in Leigh on Sea had double booked us, so Tony and I ended up doing a pub in Harlow instead.

The fact that Tony was ringing the pub, and they weren't even answering annoyed him so much, he felt "right that's it - I'm off" (my words, not his) - so we now entertain the troops in Southend-on-Sea instead - at The Borough Hotel.

Know when to go - don't just leave it dragging on for a prolonged period of time.
