Is it better to have a regular venue, or one off gigs?
If you wish to build up a following, then it is desirable to have at least one residency where the public knows it can find you.
However, I wouldn't knock the idea of having one off gigs on the head.
At the residency, you will get the same old faces singing the same old songs, it is up to you to persuade your public to try new things, as left to themselves, they will most probably stick with their comfort blankets.
At one off gigs, the opportunity is there to hear new voices, and different songs, and also the opportunity to present your show to those that have never seen you before. Many one off gigs become regular....even if regular means once every couple of months.
