How do you go about getting gigs?
Lots of possibilities here. Get some business cards and/or flyers made up, and approach venues with a positive attitude.
If you have already completed some gigs, take some photographs of the people enjoying themselves, pictures of your rig, lighting effects you have etc. and make up a portfolio of your business.
Register with a reputable agent, that will find you gigs. You may have to pay anywhere between 10 - 20% of your take to the agent, and he may well set the fee that you will be getting as well, but it is all good experience, and you dont only have to do jobs he gets you, or indeed take jobs that he offers you if you dont like the look of them. They do come in handy if you have a lean week approaching.
Put an ad on Karaoke Info and in the Yellow Pages, and/or local newspaper. The Yellow Pages can be an expensive outlay, but has been known to be fruitful for many KJs, and providing you get a few bookings, the outlay will soon be re-couped and is of course tax deductable! :)
Word of mouth. Nothing will do your business any better than the recommendation of you by your customers. Treat them well and they will come back time after time. The punters are your bread and butter, without them, you have no show!
