What is the best way to use a microphone?

To use a microphone, point it directly towards the opening of your mouth. Do not hold it to one side, and unless you have a very projectional voice, not too far away from your mouth either. Do not cup the head of the microphone in your hand. All this will achieve is to make you sound like you are singing into a tunnel, and possible cause feedback.

If you are using a corded mic, please try not to bend the lead connecting it up, so that you are holding a loop against the mic. This makes the wires inside the lead start to wear.

Please do not swing the mic. Again it can damage the wires inside the lead, and there is a danger of the microphone actually coming away from the lead and hitting someone.

When getting up to sing, assume the KJ knows their job, and that the mic will be on ready for you to start singing into, and refrain from thumping it with your hands. This does it no good.

Screaming in to the microphone is another no-go area. Not only does it make you look rather silly on the stage, but it can damage a person's amplifier, especially if they have no limiter or compressor on it.

When singing a duet, make sure you do not stand too close together, or try to shove each other's mics in each other's faces. This is another reason why you often hear those high pitched squeals known as feedback.
