Karaoke and my thoughts

Seeing it has been a while since anyone has written an article for KI, I thought I’d do another.

I’m not sure what it is going to be about yet so I’ll just start and go with the flow , you’ll have to excuse me if I do a Billy Connolly and start wondering off in different directions.

So……Ah Yes , One thing that does surprise me, no one in Bristol or Bath ( that I’ve seen or know of) is around my age that presents karaoke. There are plenty of DJ’s , shed fulls of them , all much better than me and they deservedly are…I particularly avoid discos when I can , and always insist if someone books with me that they also really want karaoke. I Find myself befriending older people in there 40’s this leads me to the conclusion that I must be mad. Most youngsters are out enjoying their weekends , while I’m out making sure they do , but I can’t relate to them at all! They all love Justin Timberlake or 50cent , while id rather listen to Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams , they love larger and vodka , I’d rather have a bitter or a nice drop of white.

I hate doing discos for people of my age also, because all they want is R+B. I Like some of it , but I can’t put up with it all night long , does me rocker in. karaoke’s are even worse , they all get really really drunk and sing Eminem , there seems to be some fascination with swearing down a microphone a kick they don’t get from simply talking normally. I certainly do think of myself as an individual and certainly not like many lads my age. I Sometimes think I have grown up too quickly, after all I was running my own business by the time I was 18 and a half . I’ve been forced to act responsible and do the grown up stuff. I’m not complaining I think I’m a better person for it.

But I do sometimes wonder if I’ve missed out on anything. Nah!

Back to my initial train of thought, if I’m the youngest KJ in Bristol and Bath (that I know of) who’s gonna be providing the karaoke shows of the future. Not too sound degrading to you older chaps that are doing it but I’ve seen a few shows , where it looked as though the host was about to keel over with exhaustion. Who will keep the home fires burning?

Lots of my friends think karaoke is really stupid, but as I say to them they’d be the first up if they were in the right situation i.e. – pub beer – karaoke. Does karaoke need an image makeover to make it more appealing for the younger generation , or has society become so vanity driven that self conscience youngsters wouldn’t even try for fear of ridicule.

Take for example the Pop Idols and Fame Academy, is this good for the industry? Do these kinds of shows give kids the emphasis for get up and go?

Wow just looked up and seen how much I’ve yapped…..ah well I’ll send it to Joy use it bin whatever , weird how the mind works init!
